Vignettes are small sketches of life.
This is intended to be the start of a
VERNE'S VIGNETTES 1989
Our children are our heritage. What we leave them is their heritage. The story of your life will help them. Make your words sweet to your children today. Tomorrow you may have to eat them.
Many of us are ready to do anything the Lord wants us to do as long as he doesn't ask us to do it.
This generation of youth the Lord expects more from than any other. They are to lead the world, not just the Church.
When challenged by youth, your attitude should be "I am not your judge, but I am one of your leaders and have the obligation to declare the truth as it is.
Our greatest joys in life come from our children. Our greatest heartaches also come from them.
Parley P. Pratt said, "it is the meek only who shall receive the promised inheritance. They are lawful heirs. Blessed are the meek was the promise of the Savior. But who are the meek? By what peculiarities are they distinguished from other men? There must be some qualities about them far superior to the generality of mankind, or they would not become the exclusive heirs of the new earth. The law of meekness includes all the laws of the gospel with its ordinances and blessings, priesthood and powers, through obedience to which mankind becomes justified, sanctified, purified and glorified. Such are the meek of the earth---none others. "
It is an infamy to die and not be missed.
One of the first things Jesus would like to do for people is to relieve them of their burdens.
Suffering tempers, they should either to sweetness or bitterness. Sometimes it leads to repentance, sometimes to rebellion.
Heaven must be in me before I can be in heaven.
I have only just a minute.
There is no one thing a person may do to be a good missionary. Exaltation consists of a great many things.
No deviation from the path of service is acceptable. There are no shortcuts in receiving the acclamation of "well done, thou good and faithful servant."
John Taylor said if you do not magnify your calling, you will be held accountable for those you could have touched and didn't.
Deeds of greatness are often performed from small cubbyholes.
Lots of people who complain there's no justice should hope they are right.
Fishing is a form of therapy, which helps cure a man of wasting time in any other way.
One day we will understand fully how complete our commitment was in the first estate, in accepting the very conditions of challenge in our Second Estate about which you and I sometimes complain. One day our personal pre-mortal promises will be laid clearly before us and when we are finally judged in terms of our performance in this Second Estate we will see that God indeed is perfect in his justice and perfect in his mercy. We will also see then when we fail her it will not be because we were truly tempted above that which we were able to bear. There was always an escape hatch if we had looked for it. We will also see then that our lives had been fully and fairly measured.
Our trouble is that we give our children too many precepts and not enough examples.
Driven by lust for money or enslaved by pleasure, the adult generation forgets that the most solemn obligation any person can assume in the eyes of God and man is to guide and direct a child along proper paths. To place anything ahead of that is akin to criminal negligence.
From our youth, our parents and teachers give us our aims and ideals. Basically we are a composite of their environment and influence.
Society itself is responsible for the creation and glorification of the gangster through social conditions, the stage, motion pictures, tabloids, magazines and fiction.
Parents cannot shift the responsibility of raising their children to anyone. If you do shift it, a slow creping moral disintegration of decay will manifest itself shortly in the next generation. When the state or society takes over the direction of your children, free agency passes away and you are on the devil's premises.
Stephen L. Richards said "I doubt if there exists in all the world any place in institution comparable to a family for the inculcation of the principle of unselfishness and mutual consideration.
A young man's father was worried about him not going to church, not interested in the gospel. He asked me to talk to the boy. As I approached the youth, I said "you know, you have a wonderful father. " The boy said', "yes, and I'm worried about him. He has never taken me to a picture show or gone fishing or to the beach. What do you think we could do about him?"
How many mothers of you have kneeled down and prayed, "oh, God, help me to be a better mother to my child?" Then, you have walked right past the library where you could bet a good book on literature or the psychology of child-training which would help you be a better parent?
We have to learn to distinguish between tolerance for sin and sympathy for sinners.
If we don't accept the responsibility of declaring the word we will find ourselves failing to receive eternal exaltation as well as those we fail to reach.
What give again?, I asked in dismay.
Emerson declares somewhere that the mass of men worry themselves into nameless graves, while here and there a great unselfish soul forgets himself into immortality.
From The Quest Of The Holy Grail--
Story of four ministers discussing the merits of various translations of the bible. One liked the King James, another liked the American Revised, another like Moffatts, The fourth was silent and when asked to express an opinion said, "I like my mother's translation best." the others expressed surprise that his mother had translated the bible. "Yes, she did," he said. "She translated it into life and it was the most convincing translation I have ever seen."
When should we start to train our children? One hundred years before they are born, says one great thinker.
One of the most touching incidents in the life of Him who bore the sin and sorrow of the world occurred in the last agonizing moment of His mortal life. Tortured with indescribable pain, and forsaken by the Father, Jesus sought earthly comfort. He looked upon his stricken mother and cried, "woman, behold they son." It is only the spirit of motherhood uniting with the spirit of Christ that will refine the world and purify the hearts of men.
Motherhood is the best career for woman--and it also has the advantage of being entirely free from male domination.
Home building is a fine art, the work of a master craftsman. The man and woman who can create at the fireside the climate in which strong men and true women grow has created something finer than ever found expression in marble or stone. The sublime creations of the poet and artist which glorify the ages are not comparable to the molding of the immortal soul of man.
God first comes to you through your mother.
No nation ever rises higher than its level of family life.
Mary Ball Washington is responsible for the very existence of our great country today. She said of her boy, George, "he was always a good boy." George Washington took his aged mother to introduce her to General Lafayette who said, Of such are the mothers of America, well she may boast of her illustrious sons."
A stream can rise no higher than its source. The source of mankind is its mothers.
The sanctity of the home embodies the principle of continued love through all circumstances or conditions of life.
Joy is the barometer of right living.
Provoke your husband to do good works instead of just provoking him!
In our new modern life, there are things causing problems. We are living in that day in which Timothy said there would be men and women who be "lovers of their own selves, unthankful, without natural affection, proud, covetous, boasters, and selfish. "
If all the people who go to sleep in church were stretched out end to end, they would be more comfortable.
As parents we sometimes transmit to our children a great deal of false or incorrect information. Knowing that children are not critical of what we give them, we must learn to be careful and to give conscious attent10n to the quality of the ideas which are expressed in our homes.
You don't pay tithing with money--you pay it with faith.
Parents, love your kids into the kingdom.
When we die, we should say, I have finished my day's work. We cannot say I have finished my life's work. Life goes on for eternity.
Each person is a bundle of accomplishments from other worlds holding within their souls the possibilities of world's to come.
It is well to weep for those who die, but we should weep more for those who have no hope of eternal life who are living.
Those who die in Christ shall not taste of death for it shall be sweet unto them. Good men but see death, the wicked taste of it.
There are three classes of mankind; The slaves who do the will of another, the knaves who do only their own will and the freemen who do the will of God.
He is a wise man who can avoid evil; he is a patient man who can endure it; but he is a valiant man who can conquer it.
Life is full of "boomerangs"--things that come back upon us. George Herbert wrote, "he who cannot forgive breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass."
How can we find God's will. The prophet Amos showed us how. He found God's will through meditation while watching sheep on a hillside. Revelation came to Amos upon the hills. In a vision he saw God standing on the altar. He learned God's will from a basket of summer fruit, and he learned it from a pest of locusts.
Do you accept responsibility as defeat or challenge?
Ye are the salt of the earth. Matt. 5:13. What is salt. Salt is the stuff that spoils the potatoes when there isn't any in them. Another characteristic of salt is that, when it is used it loses its identity by absorption into the thing it is used to season or preserve. It is selfless. The true Mormon loses himself in his absorption in the work of seasoning life with the spirit of God.
A man cannot directly' choose his circumstances but he can choose his thoughts and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.
The dreamers are the saviors’ of the world. Without vision the people perish.
Calmness of the mind as a beautiful jewel of wisdom.

One person has said, "I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work the more of it I seem to have."
Men are anxious to improve the circumstances but are unwilling to improve themselves.
You can be happy anywhere.
No Sunday shoppers will be in the Celestial Kingdom.
The person pulling on the oars doesn’t have time to rock the boat.
Liberty means responsibility and that is why most men dread it. Freedom is worth whatever price we have to pay for it.
It is easier to be critical than to be correct.
Eternity is the extension of the patterns of life.
A group of people were being taken on a tour of the hydroelectric power plants at Niagara Falls. There are bays where the turbulent Niagara waters are held temporarily to stop their surging. The guide said "We have to quiet the water, take the turbulence out of it, before we can get full power from it." Likewise, we need to get the tension and turbulence out of our lives before God can fill us with His power and have us become instruments of peace.
There was a child who was given a picture puzzle of the world to work on. Soon he returned it to the teacher completed. The teacher said it was impossible to complete in so short a time. Asked how he had done it, the child said there was a picture of a man on the other side. I just put the man together and the world came out alright.
There is no greater' heresy than that man makes his own god who changes with the cultural and intellectual development possessed the man creating him.
We are sent into the world to teach. not to be taught of men. (Speaking of the gospel.)
Every generation is a relay station to pass on the eternal truths to the next.
We are the sum total of all those who have influenced or touched our lives.
It's funny how children tend to act like their parents in spite of everything we do to teach them differently.
The temple is God's institution of higher learning.
Are you willing to pay the price of your pride to become a candidate for the Celestial Kingdom?
There is a story about a young man who years ago went to the coalfields of West Virginia. He sought work so that he might support his mother. The only work they had to offer the lad was the turning of the crank of the blower that pumped fresh air down the shaft to the miners. "I had to stand on tiptoe," he said, "and sometimes I nearly fell down from sheer exhaustion. But I would think of the men below and realize their very lives depended on the air from the blower I was turning. Knowing my work was important, I applied myself to the task and all was well.” Are we pumping our share of life down the shafts of God's mines. Our dead relatives are down in the earth (their bodies) like the miners and waiting for us to pump or turn the crank on the blower so that life may be pumped to them. It takes effort and great dedication to keep turning the handle.
Robert Louis Stevenson said "everyone sooner of later sits down to a banquet of consequences.”

Listen to the exhortation of the dawn.
The heart is a garden row,
We must watch what we think
In a real though figurative sense, the Book Of Life is the record of the acts of men as such record is written in their own bodies. It is the record engraven on the very bones, sinews, flesh of the mortal body. That is every word, though and deed has an effect on the human body. Al these leave their masks, marks which can be read by Him who is eternal as easily as the words in a book can be read. When the Book Of Life is opened in the day of Judgment, men's bodies will show what law they have lived. The Great Judge will then read the record of the book of their lives, the account of their obedience or disobedience will be written (etched, engraved, ingrained, recorded) in their bodies.
Your soul or your spirit is righteous and worthy, it is nearly perfect. It is striving within you to spur you toward perfection. It earned the right to progress to this estate.

Is it possible to imagine a greater source of sorrow than to be left in the eternal worlds without claim on father and mother, children, husband or wife?
The family unit continues only in the Celestial Kingdom. If I am faithful and worthy of exaltation, my father will be my father and I will be subject to him as his son throughout all eternity I will be father to my son.
They say that man is might,
But a mightier power and stronger,
Don't be too wise to be taught!
Are your everyday doings of the caliber to be everlasting in their effect?
Goethe said, "the happiest man is he who knows how to bring into relation the end and the beginning of his life."
Inspiration and preparation are very closely related.
"What is this place noted for," asked a traveler of an old time resident. "Why mister, this is the starting point for any place in the world. You can start here and go anywhere you want to," came the reply. Right here and now is the starting place of eternity.
It was questioned whether Niagara Falls was the greatest source of undeveloped power. Why, no. The greatest area of undeveloped power lies in your own head.
Man is God's greatest miracle. Each individual is an act of God. Each one must be accounted for in a direct family line back to Father Adam. Are you your brother's keeper, your father's keeper, you grandfather and great grandfather's keeper too?
Temples are the connection between heaven and earth, between mortality and immortality, transcending space and eternity.
Those who do temple work have the power to reach into the past and say as Christ did, "today thou shalt be with me in Paradise."
Direct reference to need of temples in the scriptures is in Malachi 3:1 where it says, "The Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple."
When people have come to President Lee about not being able to have children, he would interview them. He would ask about their previous use of contraceptives. If they had been used, he would not give them a blessing. He would ask about their tithe paying and could' only give them a blessing according to the way they lived that law. He also asked whether they were involved in genealogy research or not. If they didn't' care about their ancestors, how could they have proper concern for their children.
You hold the keys of the destiny of your fathers, your mothers and your progenitors from generation to generation. You hold the keys of their salvation. God has put that power in your hands. But if we do not what is required of us in this thing we are under condemnation.
Salvation in behalf of the dead is the most glorious subject belonging to the everlasting gospel. It is the greatest responsibility in the world that God has laid upon us--to seek after own dead.
The time granted to the saints to redeem their dead and seal their living relatives before the earth shall be smitten with a curse is none too long.
In the judgment, we will all have tears in our eyes. Some will have tears of gratitude, happiness, accomplishment, and success. Others will have tears of remorse, anguish, embarrassment and chagrin. God will wipe away all the tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, nor any more pain, for the former things are passed away. The tears wiped away will be those of the righteous only. Contrast this with the scriptures that say there will be weeping and wailing. Those will be the unrighteous.
The work will be done for our dead either now or in the millennium, but later we won't get the blessings and eternal salvation for doing it.
Sometimes when I consider what consequences come from little things I am tempted to think, there are no little things. Bruce Barton

President Brigham Young said there are higher ordinances performed in the spirit world. Where would these be performed-- in the temples built for this sacred work
It doesn't matter how wonderful a principle of the gospel is if we don't deliver it to those wait for it. It is impossible to pass on to our children virtues and abilities we have not been able to perfect in ourselves. No matter what you have learned, if you don't pass it on you have failed.
It is overwhelming to realize that we are the only link by which the wisdom of the past and present can be transmitted to future generations.
We must teach our children that the temple with all its genealogical work is the strongest pillar of the church and an integral part of their daily lives.
The LDS has the genealogical responsibility and duty to all the families within the geographical confines of the stake.
There is juvenile delinquency. But there is also parental delinquency. They are working for self-satisfaction only.

By their fruits (children) ye shall know them.

Shakespeare put his pen to these words: "What a piece of work man is, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and in moving. How express and admirable in action. How like an angel, in appearance how like a God."
Anyone in the image and likeness of God is big enough to meet life and meet every requirement of eternity.
Every ounce of obedience brings a bushel of blessings-Neal Maxwell.
As important as are all other principles of the gospel, it was the freedom issue which determined whether you would receive a body. To have been on the wrong side of the freedom issue during the war in heaven meant eternal damnation. how then can LDS expect to be on the wrong side in this life and escape eternal consequences?
A lion met a tiger as they drank beside a pool. Said the tiger, "tell me why you are roaring like a fool. "That's not foolish," said the lion, with a twinkle in his eyes. "They call me the king of bests, because I advertise." A rabbit heard them talking and ran home like a streak. He thought he'd try the lion's plan, but his roar was a squeak. A fox came in to investigate and had luncheon in the woods. So when you advertise, my friends, make sure you have the goods.
If you think about Heavenly Mother, you women are created in her image. She has given everything that is right for you. She spends every moment for your benefit. She has said, along with Father, this is my glory and my work to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of my daughters. If this is a person whom you want as a Heavenly Mother, then you learn and strive with all your hearts and efforts to learn of her and her ways. Is she a likeable person with a pleasing personality? Does she speak kindly? Does she know how to keep a good home? Does she tend her babies and read to them? Perhaps she is a wizard with a needle or an artist who can paint
