Our Family Legacy

Truth & Error
From the beginning of time there has been present in the world two opposing forces, truth & error, seemingly one contesting the other to see which should have the greater following.
In all instances we see error leading in majority quantity while truth has the but mynority quality. Because of evil being present the richeous thru toil stress & struggle & the over coming of temptation are ever rising to greater heights, and to the richeous, life seems to be a warfare of conflicting tendencies, for God has ever & will always have a tried people. It requires as much energy on the part of those who would do right and keep Gods commandments as there is manifest in the opposing force & this is the stimulus that aids the upward climb, the desire for better things, the longing for a fuller & more complete life. These forces are the requisites for the purging and purifying of those who would do right & keep God’s commandments. On the other hand to the greater numbers who are weak & not determined to live richeously these same agencies conspire to drag down and to still weaken, and to debase.
The downward pull is as unvarying as the law of gravitation. It operates not only mentally & spiritually but physically as well.
To toughen the mental & moral fiber there must be exercise of the will, the subdueling of evil passions, & the over coming of temptation, just as there must be exercise of the physical body to insure its greatest efficiency.
In the struggle to lead a richeous life the mind & soul of the individual is the real battle ground. Though the inspired teacher & preacher may help greatly still the brunt of the battle must be born by the indivigual himself.
The downward tendency of our physical bodies is no less true.
It is true, that many diseases thru the intelligent application of sanitary laws have been in a great measure conquered. And the modern idea of looking upon the body as a machine that must be repaired when its parts are out of adjustment is adding materially to the length of life & well being of the indivigual. The infant mortality has been greatly reduced with the bringing into use of better hygienic laws in feeding, & by the watchfulness of health authorities & their efforts in forcing those keeping unsanitary places to be cleaned up & made safe and as a result disease is not lurking & as prevalent as it used to be. By all these things the average length of life is increasing & the race is gaining more power over disease each year. Yet it is a matter of common knowledge that it requires our unremitting effort to maintain the balance of health in the body.
In the struggle for physical well being the individual must by the rigid observance of health laws do very much for himself, & as the mental & spiritual guides may help in the realms wherein they are authority, so may the right kind of physician render valuable aid in the physical domain.
The shortening of man’s stature that comes with advancing years, the sagging & stiffening of the segments of the spinal column are typical & illustrative of the downward pull on the physical plane.
So long as a person can keep his spine erect & supple he is successfully resisting the tendency that drags him to the earth & his long home there.
The physician who does most to remove the effects of injury to the spine who is most effective in overcoming the stiffness of its joints & thus enable his patient to keep the errect posture & his head high, is the one who does the most valuable work for the bodies of men. Even as the teacher & religious worker who inspires the upward gaze, the lofty ideal, is the one who does the most valuable work for the minds & souls of men.
Man to my mind was once stronger physically at least & possibly mentally & spiritually two than he is today. As in the days of Adam & posterity, they lived much longer then than we do from not having the physical ills to contend with that we are subject to now & recently coming from the presence of God it seems to me that they should be more capable of living richeously at that time than we are today with all of Satans improved methods of bringing war upon the world and the marked competition in all the affairs of life which makes it a warfare of the survival of the fittiest.
But we find them giving away to evil & temptation then as well as in all succeeding generations. It was Satan’s determination when cast out from Heaven & the presence of God to commence a war with the people on earth & so he started with the weaker of the two in the Garden of Eden. As a result Adam & Eve were driven from the Garden & the earth was cursed for their sake.
Again we hear of him using his influence with Cain in opposition to Abel his brother whom the Lord looked upon with greater favor because of his richeousness here the evil power was the greater & as a result Cain slew Able, the first murder we have any record of but it has continued from that time in every generation up to the present with increased power.
We again hear of the people being led away in the days of Noah, & the Lord sent Noah as a richeous preacher to call them unto repentance telling them if they did not repent destruction would surely come upon them.
Noah preached to the people building the ark at the same time for a hundred years or more & only received ridicule & false prophet from the hosts who were deceived by Lucifer while Noah & his family numbering 8 Souls were saved in the ark.
Again we have the starting of a richeous people but who because of the tendency downward were again found in transgression in the days of Moses & as a result of this disobedience they were taken into captivity by the Egyptians under King Pharaoh.
The Lord told Moses to go down into Egypt & lead the children of Israel into the wilderness where they were to become a tried people, he commenced his labor by going out among the people & quietly conversing with them upon the proposed exodus, they had no faith in him at first but the Lord influenced them to the extent that they heeded his message & followed Moses their leader, but no sooner were they freed from bondage & fairly on their way than the Lord began to test their faith by causing some trials to come upon them, then they wanted to return to the land of Egypt & to bondage again but this was not the purpose of the Lord so they were induced by his power thru Moses to continue their journey towards the land of promise. As they neard the promised land the Lord desired to commune & covenant with them. Again they doubted his word & they ask Moses to be their spokesman. Rather than listen to the voice of the Lord they stood at a distance while Moses communed with God. They had forgotten how the hosts of Pharaoh thru the power of the Lord had been caused to perish in the red Sea while they themselves were spared & crossed over dry shod & on dry land. They no longer remembered that the destroying Angel had passed by their doors sparing the first born of the Children of Israel while the first born of the Egyptians were slain.
As Lamen & Lemual had forgotten the visit of the angel to them so also did the chirdren of Israel forget that the Lord had fed them in the wilderness with manna. They doubted Moses as the people doubted Noah in his time. All of the prophets & holy men of God in their time & dispensation have been considered in the same way & their message has been opposed & treated lightly & finally they themselves have been put to death in one way or another.
The Savior himself regardless of his very important mission to mankind was opposed & finally put to death as was all of his ordained followers except John the Revellator whom they could not destroy because of a future work the Lord had for him to perform.
He was banished to the Ile of Patmos & there sentenced to labor in the mines. It was here that he saw the gospel restored again to the earth by an Angel who came to Joseph Smith.
The things pertaining to the Kingdom of God have always been rejected by the masses also men who have endeavored to advance great things according to their own idea & men of science have met a similar fate. Columbus is considered a great man today, but call to mind how his efforts were opposed but the Lord blessed him with persistence & altho he did not live to carry into effect his belief & desire but he laid the foundation & planted the thot or seed for others to carry into effect. As a result the beautiful land of America was discovered. The same is true of Gallileo who said the four satellite bodies revolved around Jupiter but today he is regarded as a true scientist. Multitudes gathered on the banks of the Hudson River to hoot at Roberr Fulton in the year 1807 when to their shame & surprise they watched the first steam boat sail away. Geo Stevensen was called crazy when he said the steam engine could be used for locomotive purposes. The sparks from your roaring engine will set the house tops on fire, & the smoke will pollute the air. Carriage makers & coachman will starve for want of work they said, but think of the hundreds of thousands of men who find employment & the blessing to the world in the mode of travel as a result of Geo Stevenson’s efforts & determination.
Telegraphy in its infancy met the same fate. Francis Bonald presented to the government an 8 mile telegraphic line he had constructed but it was refused & he was treated with contempt but later Morse was aided by the government & received through congress an appropriation because he proved the merits of the telegraph & it was first put into operation May 25, 1844 from Baltimore to Washington & now it extends all around the world. Is the world any better today than it has been in the past ages? Are they any more ready to accept of light & truth now than they have ever been?
Aren’t they just as blind to truth now as they have ever been in any time in the past? We find the few comparatively who are always open to truth & light & who do not doubt the possibilities of new inventions & propositions that will prove beneficial to the world. We find the quality & few who are ready to accept of new light & truth from heaven & who are ever ready to serve God & keep his commandments today as in all ages past. But the masses reject & have rejected the things of today that would prove to be beneficial to them & would eventually be salvation to them as they have done in all periods & generations past.
They have rejected the most important message today that has ever been given to the world in any dispensation that of the restored gospel as delivered to the Prophet Joseph Smith.
And now to return for a moment to John the Revelator. The Lord said unto him come up hither John & I will show you things that must come to pass hereafter, & he said among the various things he was shown. And I saw another angel flying through the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach to them that dwell upon the earth & unto every nation, kindred & tongue & people saying with a loud voice fear God & give glory to him & worship him that made the heavens & earth & seas & fountains of water Rev 14 ch.6&7
Joseph Smith comes forth with the declaration that this angel has flown & testifies that he delivered into his hands the records of the ancient American people & this record has been translated into the various languages & is now being preached to every nation kindred tongue & people just as was shown to John the Revelator on the Isle of Patmos.
The Lord told thru the boy Prophet Joseph that this gospel must be preached in all the world as a witness unto every nation then should the end come & if the world would receive this message it would be the leavening force of subdueing The world & solving the various problems that confronts the nations today & would prepare the world for the coming of the King of Kings & Lord of Lords to reign a thousand years upon the earth when the Lion & lamb should lie down together & when every man should know the Lord & love & peace should reign supreme on the hand if the world rejected this new witness for God he has given no information that his judgements in the form of famine in various parts of the earth Wars & rumors of wars the Ocean heaving beyond its bounds earthquakes & various revolts of nature all as a result of rejecting the most important message that possibly could be given that which would eventually save the entire world & exalt them in the presence of God. Has this prophecy & revelation been fulfilled? Much of it has & that which has not taken place certainly will for not one jot nor title of God’s word shall fall to the earth unfulfilled.
Joseph Smith was shown the beginning of these judgements 28 years before the civil war & he outlined & advocated a course that would have averted the conflict that took place between the north & South & known as the civil war. He said the slave question would bring about the conflict and he advocated the place of reimbursing the slave owners of his slave & liberating them, he even sent the Elders to tell of the war in the eastern cities & it was preached from the street corners. He said the war would start at South Carolina & as you all know the first gun was fired at Fort Sumpter South Carolina. Farther he said this is the beginning of war that shall eventually be poured out upon all nations beginning at that place.
If the world would have listened to the prophet of God this war would not have taken place the same is true of all similar conflicts & we would not today have had the disgraceful conflict that has just taken place in the European countries.
Germany of yesterday with her higher education, scientific attainments & high rank in literature & music is the most skeptic nation possible in the world today. Religion forms a part of their school curriculum. Germany is the home of the reformation & protestanism, is established by law, but her legalized religion is without moral power. Germany is largely controlled by the Catholic faith as is also true of Russia Austria & all the surrounding country. The church should be the salt of the earth saving in its natuue. It should be as a little leaven capable of subdueing & modifying conditions in the whole world & preparing the world for the second coming of Christ to reign as Lord of Lords & King of Kings when the law shall go forth from Zion & the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. There is something wrong or why should there be the strife & contention which God thru his servants said there should be in the last days if they rejected his gospel on the other hand, there would not be war & rumors of wars & the various revolts of nature if the world would have accepted the gospel restored anew in this dispensation but God has sent a sword & destruction in the world now that they have rejected his servants when instead of a sword & enmity between man & nations they might have had peace & prosperity & there would be no need of saying know the Lord? For they all would have known him from the greatest to the least of them. Every man woman & child owes to this world a good honest moral upright life & those who have not given such a life to the world & for the betterment of the human race have not done their duty & can well be numbered among the slothful & disobedient servants they have not improved the talents given them & are apt to be among those whose talents will be taken from them & given unto those who have made the best of their stay & opportunities of this life. Are we mindful of our souls salvation are we doing our very bets & are we as indiviguals living the moral & upright life? Are we letting our lights so shine that others seeing our good works are led to better lives themselves. Dear Brothers & Sisters we should live the honest & upright life & in whatever pursuits we may engage we must not forget that the lawful objects of human efforts are but means to higher results & nobler ends. Let us not go forward in life with the idea of becoming mere seekers of pleasure. Sportive butterflies as it were searching for gaudy flowers. Let us consider & act with reference to the true end of existence.
This world is but the vestibule of an immortal life every action of your life touches on some chord that will vibrate in eternity. These thots & motives within you stir the pulse of a deathless spirit.
Act not, then, as mere creatures of this life, who, for a little while, are to walk the valleys & the hills, & enjoy the sunshine & breath the air, and then pass away & be no more, but act as immortals, with an aim & a purpose worthy of your high nature.
Set before you as the chief object to be obtained, an end that is superior to any on earth, a desirable end, a perfect end.
Labor to accomplish a work which shall survive unchanged & beautiful when time shall have withered the garland of youth when thrones of power & monuments of art shall have crumbled into ashes; & finally, aim to achieve something, which when these our mutable & perishing voices are hushed from this life, shall live among the songs of triumph & immortality.
Well will it be for you, if you have a guide within which will aid you in every issue, which will arm you in every temptation and comfort you in every sorrow.
Consult, then, that volume whose precepts will never fail you. Consult it with a deep aspiration after the true & good, & it shall illuminate your understanding with divine realities.
Open your soul, & it shall breathe into it a holy influence, & fill all its wants.
Bind it close to your heart, it will be a shield against all the assaults of evil.
Read it in the lonely hour of desertion; it will be the best of companions.
Open it when the voyage of life is troubled; it is a sure chart.
Study it in poverty, it will upload to you inexhaustible riches.
Commune with it in sickness; it contains the medicine of the soul.
Clasp it when dying, it is the charter of immortality.
We are creatures of circumstances & to triumph over the ever present influences that tend to drag down to justify an eternal optimism, it is necessary all along the way to fight the good fight.
This should not dishearten nor depress nor discourage any one, for if we keep the faith we will some day know the joy of victory. If we lead useful lives & maintain in mind, soul, & body a sound state of health, we will be enabled to approach the inevitable end in the calm assurance that our learning this stage of action is but the beginning of an endless state of life & progression.
Let us keep our spines straight & our heads erect & let our moral standard be above reproach & endeavor to lead them wayward from the evil path which is broad & leadeth to destruction & many there are that go in there at but narrow is the way & straight is the gait to life eternal & few there are that find it.
Many more could be led to serve God if we would ourselves keep his commandments & remember if we break the least of them we are guilty of breaking the whole. Let us eliminate wickedness from ourselves, from our ward & from our community & finally from our State & Nation & all the world when Christ will be pleased to come & be our great leader. May we all do our mite in bringing about the condition of the millennium.
We are very much in need of men today to carry on the affairs of life in the world every profession & every business are well represented, in fact they are over run there are plenty of people eager to fill every political position. Still we are calling for men. Man has made such a mess of things in the political world that the women have stepped in to try & rectify conditions with the ballott, & I believe if they were encouriaged that matters would be adjusted, we would have no saloons & no immoral places at least these with kindred conditions would be greatly reduced.
The women for the fact of them taking interest in politics proves that they have lost confidence to a great extent in man & the way the business is run. So they by this step acknowledge we want men to fill the positions & not getting them in the past that is the ideal ones they, the women come forward with the hope of bettering conditions which they would do I am sure if they were in power. But this is not their calling & man is responsible for them getting out of their calling because he has not performed his part in the worlds work. What is a man? There are three things needed for perfect manliness. He must be gentle, he must be brave, & he must find a master.
It is said that when Mark Anthony found the body of his dead enemy Brutus upon the battlefield, he exclaimed:
His life was gentle, & the elements so mixt in him, that nature might stand up & say to all the world, “This was a man.”
What did Mark Anthony mean? What is it to be a man? He did not refer to the body or Brutus nor to his physical beauty.
It is not necessary to be 6 ft tall broad shouldered & handsome to be a man. For some of the most real men have been undersized ill featured & even deformed.
Alexander the Great was a small man from all accounts. So was Napoleon.
Alexander Pope possibly England’s greatest Poet except perhaps shakespear, was so misshapen that when Dean Smith fell out with him, compared him to an interrogation, alluding to his inquisitiveness and his shape at once & called him “a little crooked thing that ask questions”
Alexander Stevenson, vice-president of the confederacy & one of the greatest minds it is said that America ever produced, was so afflicted that they called him “an animated head” as the brain in him was about all that was left that was not impotent.
Robert Louis Stevensen & Richard Jefferies two of the greatest masters of English literature were both invalids.
So it is not probably that Anthony meant that Brutus was a handsome man.
Sometimes we hear the word manly used in another sense, as when we speak a boy being a manly little fellow in self defence implying that when he is hit he will strike back, but retaliation is hardly a mark of genuine manliness. Man is the Son of God. You can go up or down the scale from going up you pass by the Angels & on up to Diety as Joseph Smith says & which is substantiated in the plan of the Gospel.
“As man is God was once, & as God is man may become”
If you go down the scale from man you go by the savage & Barbarian & some men do not stop at this they go on down below the level of the animals & as there is no such a thing as standing still in one position then man is either progressing toward God & becoming more like him or on the other hand he is retrograding & becoming like the lower animals. The most perfect example instance of a true man & the characteristics which go to make up true manliness that I recall was when Jesus was nailed to the cross & surrounded by his blood thirsty tormenters & he suffering the agonies of death but amid it all he cried out “Father forgive them, for the know not what they do.”
I donot believe that Anthony spoke of Brutus with reference to his spirit of retaliation or revenge, for he said “his life was gentle.” Which is one of the very essential characteristics which goes to make up a man & this one was very manifest in the life of the Savior, but to my mind couriage comes before gentleness & the savior of the world was not at all lacking in this & so we will say couriage comes first because it sometimes requires great couriage to be gentle under all circumstanses. This is the fundamental & essential virtue.
There are savage tribes where many of the virtues of our civilization are not recognized; chastity, virtue & honesty are unknown, but there has never been discovered upon the face of the earth in times past or present, any race of man who did not honor a brave man.
The Latterday Saints especially our leaders would be honored today if they were connected with any other denomination on earth besides the true church of Christ but men are not possessed of couriage & therefore they say “your cause is just but I can do nothing for you.” But our leaders have & always will demand the respect of decent people.
To be afraid is the first & greatest of all sins. The mother who teaches her child not to be afraid of the dark is laying the rock-bottom foundation of moral character. Whoever shows a child how to be afraid, who plays upon & develops his fears, is doing him just as much harm as possibly can be done.
John Wessley’s mother said to him, “Be afraid of nothing but God, & be ashamed of nothing but sin.” The man or persons who will carry out such advice as this in their lives will never meet defeat.
Now there are two ways of being good. One is to be good because of the fear of punishment for doing wrong, the other is to be good because you are not afraid of the consequences of doing right.
The first makes the weakling & the hypocrite, the latter makes the hero.
Couriage is the true masculine virtue but man is only a half of a man unless he possesses the feminine virtue which is gentleness.
Man is the head & comes first the woman after & while manliness is the foundation of character, womanliness is the perfection of character.
When you have a person who has couriage without gentleness you have a savage possessing many good traits perhaps yet still a barbarian.
A man possessing gentleness without couriage could hardly be termed a man at all but a very poor thing. But when one is brave, & to his bravery adds gentleness then we have a specimen of that most finished product of Gods handiwork to which we have any knowledge – A Gentleman.
There are two kinds of couriage that of Brute couriage & moral couriage. The former is that possessed by Jack Johnson the prize fighter, which is half stupidity or insensibility.
But the true type of couriage is that possessed by the character of a man or woman that I have referred to.
That which was manifest all thru the life of Joseph Smith the prophet & which finally buoyed him up to say at the last of his carrier “I am going like a lamb to the Slaughter, but I am as calm as a summers morning & a conscience devoid of offense toward God & man, & it shall yet be said of me, he was murdered in cold blood. As much might be said of his Brother Hyrum.
This quality of couriage is quite as often present in a woman as it is in man. Civilization is but the womanization of the race. No people can indure womanization except it possesses a stong quality of manliness. That is why some nations thrive & some are thrown down in the process.
In all our greatest men this combination of fearlessness & gentleness is very marked. In Abraham Lincoln for instance you can see how mild & gentle he was yet as fearless as a lion.
Our Savior went fearless to death & always his sympathy went out to those in sorrow & he was ever ready to forgive any in sin.
I don’t think it would be difficult to find a master or be obedient to any requirement if we could fully possess couriage & fearlessness. But we must know how to obey & if we do this is the crowning greatness of human nature.
Man is a dependant, not an independent animal or being. He is never really great untill he has found the right master.
“Heitch your wagon to a star” said Emersson “Find a great cause & give your life to it” said Wendall Phillips.
No Knight of old was great who fought for himself, for his own profit or glory.
He must needs risk his life for his King or his lady. And no man in our times nor ever in the future can be really great or noble & command the admiration of his associates, if his aim in life is a selfish one to gain for self riches & achieve for himself place & power.
We have examples of such characters as this in some of our great American trust & money hoarders and contemptible profiteers, & on the other hand the great & noble life is portrayed in the characters heretofore mentioned.
Have your ever heard the legend of Opher? He was a huge Giant who lived in the days of story. He took for his motto in life I serve the strongest. Asking who was the strongest, he was told that the mayor of the town was the one all obeyed. So he served the mayor untill he discovered that the duke of the province commanded the mayor, then he deserted to the duke then in turn from the duke to the king; and from the king to the emperor.
One day he heard the emperor say he was afraid of the devil. “Then good-by” said Opher “I serve the strongest” and he set out to find the devil. Of course this was easy for he did not have to go far. He found the devil & served him faithfully; untill one day the two were walking the fields & came to a place where two ways met & a cross was set up. “Come” said the devil, leaping over a hedge. “I may not pass that cross.”
“May not.” Cried Opher. “Is there one who can say to you, you may & you may not?”
And Satan had to confirm that the cross was the sign of Christ & that Christ was stronger than he. “Then good-by” said Opher, “I serve the strongest”
Whereupon he began to seek for the Christ. But this was a harder task.
He ask of the monks in their monastery doors, of the peasants in the fields, & of the merchants in the highway, but some sent him on fool errands, some laughed at him, & some sadly shook their heads in dispair. At last he met a wise man who said to him, “If you would serve the Christ serve man” He said, Do you not know that inasmuch as ye serve one of the least of these my brethren ye are serving me?
So Opher set up a ferry at a dangerous point of the river where many lives had been lost and there he ferried passengers across for nothing, for the service & reward of the Christ. One night during a terrible storm Opher heard a knock at his door. Opening the door he found a little child all wet with the rain, who ask to be taken over the water. Opher besought him to wait till the morning, but the child pleaded to be taken across that night, so the giant took the child in his boat & attempted the perilous crossing. At last after the hardest of struggle he reached the other side, set out his little passenger in safety, & then even his vast strength being exhausted, he fell in a swoon upon the sands.
When he awoke the storm was gone. The moon shone brightly. Sitting up, Opher saw before him not a child, but a man, yet a man who was strangely like the child. And the man said to him, “Opher, I have seen thy good works.
I accept thy service, And henceforth thou shalt no more be called Opehr, but Saint Christopher. For this night thou has borne the Christ”
So if you would be a man you must be brave, you must be gentle, & you must find a master.
We have found our master for he has revealed himself anew in this our very day & now if you have couriage you can be gentle being gentle you will possess the characteristics of the master & you will be satisfied only in serving him & becoming more like him & to serve him & become more like him we must know him for this is life eternal to know the only true God & Jesus Christ whom he sent, & as he has revealed himself anew in this dispensation & established the gospel for the last time it is our duty each & all of us to serve him. The Gospel is true it has stood the test & its fruits have been tried & by their fruits yea shall know them. You cannot pick good fruit from a corrupt tree.
Everything new passes thru 4 stages in its growth. Thru ridicule to hatred, to toleration, to approval. Mormonism has passed three of these & its effects are being manifest to such an extent that it wont be long till it will be approved in that it is the one thing that will solve the perplexing questions that are before the world today it is already spreading its light abroad & men who have not the staminia to accept of it say if there is any religion in the world that is true you people have it but I could not accept of it in my position it would mean to me loss of prestige & financial standing in the world but the time will come when they can no longer get along with out it & they are not entirely getting along without it now because various churchs and denominations have accepted of many of the principles not knowing or at least not acknowledging that it comes from Mormonism. It started as a little stone cut out of the hill & its destiny is to roll forth & fill the whole earth & the monarchs & kingdoms of the various nations will in time be thrown down & the laws & governments of America will some day bear sway. This nation & its laws are the forerunner of the Kingdom of God for the gospel could not have been set up in any other nation & conditions will change untill the perfect law of God will be established & when that time comes for the first time a King will rule this nation & all the world for he shall be crowned Lord of Lord & King of Kings & His coming we are looking forward to may we all look to him as our master & may we be counted worthy subjects in his Kindgom & shall not be ashamed to meet him face to face.
The gospel. What is it? Paul tells us it is the power of God unto salvation unto all those that believe & obey. I would say further that it is the power of the devil unto all those who donot accept & obey.
The gospel is a plan or system of laws given to fallen man for his redemption & exaltation in the presence of God.
It consists of a system of laws given in a well planned & orderly system for the whole human family to obey for we have all fallen & come short of the glory of God. But the Lord in his wisdom has given the gospel whereby we may work out our indivigual salvation he having provided the way of escape (from the original or first sin brot into the world by our first parents) by sending his only begotten son to attone for this sin. This is a general salvation & all people black or white bond or free are made partakers of this salvation regardless of his sins. But this only saves us from the grave a judgment which takes in all of the human family & which would have been an endless sleep save for the work which the savior did to compensate & answer the ends of the broken laws. This does not save us from any personal sins which some religionists would have you believe & all that we have to do is to believe in & confess Christ at the last moment as did the thief on the cross & we will be ushered into the presence of God & his holy angels.
But he did not go to the Father for three days after & at the time when he took up his body again & appeared to Mary & she knowing it was him was about to embrace him but he forbad her & said “touch me not for I have not yet ascended to my father” but go & tell the brethren that I ascend to the father to my God & to your God.
You will recall that Jesus informed the thief upon the cross “That today thou shalt be with me in Paradise” Paradise, Hades, Shaole & spirits in prison the Prophet Joseph tells us all mean the same & that it is a world of spirits.
Peter tells us that Christ hath once suffered sins the just for the unjust being put to death but quickened by the spirit by which spirit he also went & preached to the spirits in prison which were once disobedient in the days of Noah when the ark was being built.
And so Jesus did not go to the father but went to the spirits in bondage in paradice & took the thief there with him & preached the gospel to them that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit. Yet some denominations would have you believe that Christ will take us into the presence of the father as they are mistaken in the belief that the thief went direct to the father in his sins but this is not true & the work that the savior did only redemes us from the grave & death that was pronounced upon Adam when he partook of the forbidden fruit.
Now the gospel as I have told you provides a way of escape from your indivigual sins which you are directly responsible for but the original sin we are not responsible for nor can we do a thing for ourselves to attone for it & we were left entirely to the mercy of a redeemer for those which redeemer has come.
He brought with him the plan of salvation & he says there shall be no other name given under heaven by which mankind shall be saved & you all know what this plan was for he organized the church in its fullness while in Jeruselem & commanded the apostles & his servants to go & teach it to the whole world & he said “you have not chosen me but I have chosen you & ordained you” Now he say this perfect system is to remain until we all come to the unit of the faith & we are not yet there for there are hundreds of denominations upon the earth today & we will all be to a unity of the faith when we accept & obey the one perfect system of laws.
This system does not appeal to all people seemingly, they are willing to acknowledge & accept of an earthly government & foreigners are eager to become citizens of a country in order to enjoy the rights of citizenship but when it comes to a similiar & more perfect set of laws pertaining to their future well fare they rebel.
There are the few who are humble & submissive & there always has been in every dispensation but the majority choose to go their own way to their own condemnation.
There is another class who profers to claim authority & calling from God but who love to pattern the system after their own liking to enable them to teach for doctrine the commandments of men & that for filthy lucre when Christ said “Freely ye have received & freely ye must give,” & Paul said when I preach the gospel of Christ I preach it without price that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
They only desire to live apart of the law & that part which suits them best & is easy or live none at all but if we break the least of these laws & commandments we are told we are guilty of breaking the whole.
The people in the various dispensations have been rebellious & unable to live the law of the gospel. As was the case in the days of Moses & the children of Israel. They were hard of heart, rebellious, & inclined to idolatry & superstitions of the Egyptians. So the Lord in his wisdom saw that they could not abide the principles of the gospel, neither could they be judged by them, instead of the law of the gospel which their fathers had enjoyed, God gave them the law of carnal commandments which is the law of sacrifice & burnt offerings for sin; & then he ordained & established a priesthood to suit the conditions. As Paul says, “For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change of the law,” Heb 7 ch. 1st ver.
And so Aaron (who was a brother of Moses & a levite) with his four sons were elected first to hold the priesthood & to minister in the priests office. But this authority was only a part of the powers of the Higher Priesthood & hence it is said to be an appendage to the Higher or Melechesedick Priesthood.

There is an opposing influence which arrays itself against ones better self or where he undertakes to accomplish anything, in other words man is constituted with a positive & negative force or power within, everything in this world has it’s positive & negative, even to good & bad, the positive or good influence present in the world comes from God, & while the evil influence sometimes puts on apparently the positive or good it is nevertheless the negative & evil influence & leads to destruction, however it is absolultely essential & without it there could be no progression & if man always had the good before him without its opposite the evil, he would become a dwarf physically, mentally, & spiritually, & would get no where in this world, but stagnate & die.
Good & evil have been with us always & dates back prior to the peopleing of this earth even to the council that was held in heaven when the plan of salvation was being arranged for saving fallen man as satan put forth his plan in opposition to that of Christ who was the rightful law giver & heir.
This is not far different than the characteristic make up of man himself & he is subject to the two influences good & evil, & it so often happens that the negative side of man is most strongly appealed to & he gives way to the weakness of the flesh, hence the necessity of living godly & pure lives so that we can recognize the good when it whispers, which I think always speaks to us first & if we don’t obey we are apt to yield to the evil which surely follows as the night follows the day.
In the words of one of our poets when he says “Every man hath a good angel & a bad angel attending on him in particular all his life long.
The phychological basis for the conflict that goes on within each of us is undoubtedly the presence of antagonistic instincts which is our birthright. Every one posseses these antagonisms. They donot always conflick with our consciences.
Take for example the instinct of sociability, which leads the indivigual to seek society, perhaps to be unhappy in solitude, & on the other hand shyness which leads him to avoid meeting people. This is one of the commonest conflicts. These instincts are common even in the lower animals. The deer is trapped by appealing to his uncontrollable curiosity which leads him to overcome his pronounced shyness. It is evident that this conflict goes on in every indivigual for it is the basis & superstructure of our entire moral education.
Dual personality has been written about by one of our poets; which goes like this “Within my earthly temple theres a crowd.”
Theres one of us that’s humble one that proud,
Theres one that’s broken hearted at his sins and one that unrepentant sits and grins.
Theres one that loves his neighbor as himself and one that cares for naught but fame & self.
From much corroding care would I be free If once I could determine which is me.
Look back over the years of trouble you have had with your weaker self & recall if it is not true that the good within you has at times become weary of well doing & has perhaps held out the welcome hand of fellowship to the weaker side of your nature. Again has not the weaker within you become ashamed at times of evil speaking & of wrong doing & allowed as a result your better self to predominate it is at such times that we battle up stream & become the stronger for so doing.
We all have in our ego, power for good & evil, our parents in the garden of Eden were appealed to by the evil from without but it found a lodgement with in & they disobeyed, & from thence forth evil has ever been arrayed in the world against the good. Cain was dominated by his weaker self when he slew his brother Abel. Saul forsook the evil within him on the way to Damascus & followed the good & his name was changed to Paul. In after life he taught that the material side of nature ought to be treated with contempt & that the spiritual side could be made to absorb it entirely but Paul could never have become the vehement & vigorous spiritual apostle had he not profited by the passion & vigor of Saul the persecutor. And after years of sacrifice Paul was still crying “Oh wretched man” & Paul won his victory finally by the aid of the matchless one who was able to symphatize because he himself was tempted.
There are latent forces in the human soul, which, when known & understood, can be develloped & used to control the worst in us & exalt the best.
First we creep, then we crawl, then we stand alone, & finally we walk.
This is typical of mental & moral as well as physical devellopement .
Everyone in the world who amounts to anything, it matters not the sphere of life in which his energis have develloped, has had materialistic propensities which have at times influenced him at other times overwhelmed him, but which he has finally subdued because of the appeal made to him by ideals of conduct.
We all must do what our predecessors have done who have won out, if we ourselves expect to be victorious in this world fight ie nature the good with in & by so doing starve out the evil. We must know ourselves without which we cannot progress.
Knowledge of oneself does not mean to know our short comings only but knowledge of self embraces our whole being or nature.
To know oneself in repose is not enough nor is it enough to know ones self in the past or in the present.
There are those who by their knowledge of the past & by taking advantage of the present, have the power of knowing themselves in the future.
These have faith in themselves, have control over themselves & verily are “captains of their own souls” because of their wisdom of thought & action.
This is the reason why anything which leads to knowledge of ourselves is of value, & by knowledge of ourselves we are in a way masters of ourselves. I donot mean what we would be, nor what we would have other think us to be but what we really are.
To know ourselves for what we are worth, to be able to realize calmly all that we are capable & able of doing.
To set up a true ideal; not a graven image with feet of clay; to have a broad clear vision not only help us but makes the world a better place for others. Knowledge is power & knowledge of self is the greatest power of all, for to know the weak spot in ones armour is to guard against attack, while to know ones strength is to gain independence of thought & action. From this knowledge one is led simply & naturally to a knowledge of others & thus may be develloped are intuitive sympathy with human nature.
It is said there is an aura or atmosphere surrounding each one of us, & the electrical negative or positive force emenating from this makes us magnetic or antagonistic to our fellowmen.
I believe it is more a question of an understanding mind than an atmosphere & a sympathetic soul than our electrical current.
What is it that attracts us to come people & causes us to be repelled by others.
It is according to vibratory chordes or discords in each of the two indiviguals either being in harmony physically mentally or spiritually the same sympathetic cords being struck in each or in some cases it is the much stronger personality that one has over the other & with such the stronger can often overpower the weaker personality & he may be exercising through his weaker personality to this could be termed mesmerism.
By placing ourselves in harmony with our surrounding & environment & people we can draw & learn much from them even babes.
Man has free will when his mind is attuned to the universal will but there is no free will when the mind of man is in opposition, he is in bondage to his partial thots – emotional feelings, he can free himself only by bringing his life into harmony with universal law & order. If we can be at peace with ourselves we can be at peace with all men, being attuned to self will make us in harmony with God & man & by so shaping our lives only the greatest good can come to us. All things are possible to him who believes, to him who knows; so we know in part we are able to fulfill in part; with greater knowledge & greater faith must come the greater fulfillment. We can surely realize all we desire in life if we put ourselves in harmony with our environment & give our heart & soul to that which we are seeking. Life can become just as great & just as beautiful I think as we desire it if our energies & desires are directed aright on the other hand we can allow our lives to be so filled with cloud that the sunshine, the joy of living is entirely shut out.
We must shower on others that which we desire for ourselves in giving in part one receives in part in giving all one receives all.
The reward is unto every one according to his works.
If one has given of his riches to others he is in possession of riches still for we are storing up riches in heaven by the good we make of our possessions here.
Young friends in whatever pursuits you may engage you must not forget that the lawful objects of human efforts are but means to higher results & nobler ends. Start not forward in life with the idea of becoming mere seekers of pleasure or sportive butterflies searching for gaudy flowers. Consider & act with reference to the end of existence. Set before you as the big object to obtain an ideal end one that is superior to any on earth. This would be a noble & desirable end.
This world is but the beginning of an immortal life & every action of our earthly lives touches on some chord that will vibrate in eternity.
“Every man hath a good angel & a bad angel attending on him in particular all the days of his life”. We all have a dual personality, every one playing the part of a “Dr Jekell & Mr Hyde” In the beginning we have two personalities or characters represented in Cain. One personality or A as we will call it was desirous of doing well & was inspired by one of the dual influences present in the world to perform the act of offering sacrifice while not yet fully acceptable in the sight of the Lord as was his brother Able & the other of the dual influences fully aware of this began to operate upon the second personality of Cain or X as we will call for argument sake & Cain being roth because of the Lord accepting Abels offering & not his made him give way to his second personality thru the second influence for bad in the world & so strong was this influence comingled with the second personality of Cain that the X in Cain was persuaded to commit murder & he slew his brother Able. Have you not all experienced the dominant personality at time of the good and bad in you?
You giving way to a spirit of melancholy or discouragement or other depressed feelings at times? Some times it seems that the evil in you at times has full sway & in some people it is manifest via dishonesty, lying, backbiting stealing & bearing false witness against a neighbor or brother.
While on the other hand when the better or A personality has the ground the indivigual has honest desire & is very considerate & deeply religious.
X is impish impulsive & destitute of moral responsibility & bent on harassing A & is willing to go at any length to accomplish this purpose. The ceaseless warring of these two personalities is responsible in some people to seek relief in suicide.
You have all heard of people committing some act of theft or other acts that have afterwards caused them to sorely repent & in many cases go to the injured one & make restitution.
This is the evil to the two personalities taunting & trying to overcome the good in the indivigual.
There cannot come to you & evil or good influence to cause you to act one way or the other with out the evil or good striking with in you a responsive cord & such response if you are sufficiently susceptive to it will stimulate you to action. I believe the good in most people is predominant. I believe the spirits who stood for good in the spirit world associated more closely with the good I also believe those who kept not their first estate but chose to go with Satan were well acquainted with him from close association & that the spirit has a dual personality untill it entirely over comes weaknesses or else where was there any progression in the spirit world if we had not trials to meet & over come the fact that we had our own free agency proves to me that we were dually constituted & the Lord knew we would choose either the good or the evil & what was it in us prompted us to choose the good? Was it not the good in us responding to the good without & was it not the opposite in those who took the opposite view that caused them to follow Satan? Are they not endowed with a dual nature now? Some one has said that Satan will give 99 truths to get you to believe a lie if this is true he certainly was in possession of the two characteristic influences I have been referring to. How necessary it is for parents to safe guard their children while young & train them while their minds are plastic & succeptible to teaching & influences brought to bear upon them while in youth it isn’t possible to always keep the good before them but it is possible to keep it before them the most of the time sufficient I think to keep the good predominating over the bad untill when a certain degree of perfection is reached there will be not dual personality but the good will predominate & this will be accomplished by the gaining of knowledge for “we are saved no faster than we gain knowledge” so says Joseph Smith & we cannot gain knowledge & continue to gain knowledge without overcoming & becoming more capable of overcoming evil.
We must not become weary of well doing or the weaker influence or part of your duality will take advantage of this & assert his rights & lead us away from doing good to things of evil.
We sometimes become ashamed of speaking evil against our fellow man & doing other things that we ought not to do & so marked is this shame that the good predominates again for a time & we are for some days & possibly months led to good acts.
I feel that there has been a conflict going on within me or that my dual personality has been debating the one on the one hand saying you are tonight going to use the valuable time of this audience to no very great profit while there are those present who could with more capability occupy the time to the good of this people who are to listen & you no doubt will bring censure upon yourself by some who may be present who would prefer listening to some one else occupy the time. Again the other personality calls to mind the fact that I am occupying this position & your valuable time by request of those who have the right to ask of me to attempt to fill this position & now that the conflict has been overcome & the decision a been awarded to my better self in that I am rendering obedience to the authority over me in the request of me to speak to you tonight I trust that I shall be influenced by the better personality or spirit of the Lord that I may give to you some food for thot which will stimulate each of you to a better lifes work & richious endeavors & to this end I implore your undivided attention & most of all your faith and prayers that I may do the Lords bidding in my attempt to occupy your time tonight.
One writer has said, “Every man hath a good angel & a bad angel attending on him in particular all his life long” & I believe he meant the dual personality I have mentioned & I believe to that we all are in possession of these two sides of life or experiences.
The Psychological basis for the conflict that goes on within each of us no doubt is due to antagonistic instincts which date back to our birth right. Every one possesses these antagonisms. They donot always conflict with our consciences.
Take, for example, the instinct of sociability, which leads the indivigual to seek society, perhaps to be unhappy in solitude, & on the other hand, shyness, which leads him to avoid meeting people. This is one of the commonest conflicts. These ancestral instincts are common even in the lower animals. The deer is trapped for instance by appealing to his uncontrollable curiosity which leads him to overcome his pronounced shyness. It is evident that this conflict goes on in every indivigual, for it is the basis & superstructure of our entire moral education. If we didn’t have it there would be little necessity for a moral code. We have milder cases of dual personality where there is no separation of memories in such cases we have to deal with character tendencies more or less organized & systematic which pull in opposite directions. While in others thee is more definite organization of these personalities.
Duel personality has been spoken of by another writer whos words comes to mind just now
“Within my earthly temple theres a crowd,
There’s one of us that’s humble, one that’s proud,
There’s one that’s broken hearted at his sins and one that unrepentant sits & grins.
